Total Urology Care of NY, “TUC” is under the medical direction of Elizabeth Kavaler MD, a surgeon who is double-board certified in Urology and Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (Uro/Gynecology).
TUC’s culture of care delivers compassionate, evidence-based, and state-of-the-art medicine in our family-owned practice. TUC welcomes all genders with urological issues including urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, cystitis, enlarged prostate, bladder cancer, elevated PSA, concerns related to sexual health (male and female), Peyronie’s disease, and kidney stones. Most procedures and tests can be performed on-site in our exceptionally comfortable, modern and clean office. TUC’s facility is licensed for radiology and is one of the few urology practices in Manhattan with a high-complexity, rapid test, PCR lab for UTI testing. Most patients can have a full urological work up on-site.
Dr. Kavaler offers consultations on ensuring and maintaining urological wellness for her patients. Her emphasis includes understanding your body’s urinary tract health (including urinary tract infections and incontinence), sexual function, menopause, and aging. She is a sought-after resource for a second opinion on most aspects of urologic care.
Dr. Kavaler’s skilled staff greets and treats you, and your family, with genuine compassion, dignity and expert care. Please read what our patients say about us in our review section.
Dr. Kavaler is the author of “A Seat on the Aisle, Please! A complete guide to urinary tract health in women.” She is on the medical advisory board of Men’s Health Magazine. She is sought after to speak both regionally and nationally on women’s and men’s pelvic health. Her expert opinion on urology is frequently called on for legal cases involving urological and urogynecolgic care. Dr. Kavaler has privileges at three major NY hospitals including NY Presbyterian/Cornell, Lenox Hill Hospital, where she is on the medical board, and Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx, where she provides surgical care to residents of our community who cannot afford healthcare or medical insurance. She trains residents at all three hospitals in urological surgery.
The FDA has come out with a draconian decision removing vaginal mesh from the market. This decision now forces women, who need surgery, to undergo hysterectomies, removal of healthy organs (ovaries), and necessitates risky, painful, expensive and unnecessary abdominal operations to repair their pelvic organ prolapse (“POP”).
I have performed over 4,000 vaginal mesh repairs for women with incontinence and POP in New York City, with minimal complications and no mortality. Speaking as a woman, surgeon, scientist and healer, I know the decision by the FDA to pull vaginal mesh is a disservice to women.
Robust scientific data, with randomized controlled studies, is available to support the safety and efficacy of vaginal mesh in the right hands. Over two million vaginal mesh surgeries have been successfully performed with minimal complications. Heavily promoted advertisements, by financially-motivated law firms, have drawn over 100,000 women into litigation that is often without merit. This is an affront to women’s health in the United States. The FDA has caved to emotional pressure from a few anecdotal cases while disregarding scientific evidence, setting back women’s health by decades.
In practice for 20 years, I am a women urologist, double boarded in both Urology and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. I authored a book for the lay public on urological disorders in women called “A Seat on the Aisle, Please!”. I am a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Urologist at Lenox Hill hospital and Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. At all three hospitals I train residents in both Urology and OB/GYN in the area of female pelvic medicine. FDA Decision
